Overview of Cancer in Hawai‘ i, 2018-2022
• Each year, an average of 7,852 Hawai‘ i residents are diagnosed with invasive cancer.
• A total of 75,756 Hawai‘ i residents are living with cancer including those newly diagnosed or previously diagnosed with cancer.
• During the period 2018-2022, the statewide average annual incidence rate for all cancers combined was 427.5 per 100,000 in males and 395.4 per 100,000 in females.
• The most common cancer in men is prostate cancer, which accounts for 26 % of cases, followed by cancers of the lung & bronchus( 10 %), colon & rectum( 10 %), melanoma of the skin( 8 %), and bladder( 5 %).
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, comprising 34 % of cases, followed by cancers of the lung & bronchus( 10 %), colon & rectum( 8 %), uterus / endometrium( 8 %), thyroid( 4 %), and melanoma of the skin( 4 %).
• Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death( a�er cardiovascular disease) in Hawai‘ i.
• Each year, an average of 2,519 Hawai‘ i residents die of cancer.
• During the period 2018-2022, the average annual mortality( death) rate for all cancers combined was 144.9 per 100,000 in males and 105.1 per 100,000 in females.
• The leading cause of cancer death in men is lung & bronchus cancer, which accounts for 20 % of cancer deaths, followed by cancers of the prostate( 11 %), colon & rectum( 10 %), pancreas( 8 %), and liver & intrahepa�c bile duct( 8 %).
• Lung & bronchus cancer is also the top cause of cancer death in women( 20 %), followed by cancers of the breast( 15 %), pancreas( 9 %), colon & rectum( 9 %), and uterus / endometrium( 5 %).
• Notable trends:
• Colon & rectum cancer incidence is rising more than 3 % per year among adults under age 50.
